Day 2

Marine Garden Club Grove to Standish-Hickey State Park

47.3 Miles

The next morning I had breakfast with Joshua and Jeffrey. Then I got packed up and headed out.

After a little while Jeffrey and Joshua passed me, so I started drafting off of them. We were flying. Then we were going up a hill, and I fell behind. But at the top of the hill Jeffrey stopped. He had broken a spoke. Joshua continued on, but I stayed to help. Once he got it dealt with, I sucked off his wheel until Phillipsville. Then I stopped to change my map and he continued on. I wanted to slow it down anyway.

Back on the 101, it became very hot without the shade. Going up a steep hill, sunscreen poured into my eyes.

I stopped by the lake in Benbow for lunch. After lunch I continued along a side street. I realized that I had forgotten to reapply sunscreen, so I stopped. Just then Joshua rolled up. He'd stopped for a mail drop in Garberville.

Joshua by stone bridgeWe rode on together to Legget. Then into Standish-Hickley State Park, where we met Robert. He was from Seattle. He had started in Eugene, cycled south, and was heading back north to Eugene. He had gone to the Sun Festival. His divorce had become final the day before he left.

Then Ken and Phillip arrived. Ken was from LA, and Phillip from Seattle. Joshua had been running into them the entire way. Ken had cycled all over, including three times across the country. This was Phillip's third tour.
